Music Therapy Can Help You Get a Better Night’s Sleep

A study in the International Journal of Nursing Studies found that people who listened to soothing music for 45 minutes before their bedtime spent more time in restorative REM sleep.

In evaluating the efficacy of music therapy for acute and chronic sleep disorders in adults (such as obstructive sleep apnea), a meta analysis was undertaken that included reviewing 227 research articles on the subject as well as identifying ten studies that involved 557 participants.

Remember those bedtime lullaby’s that helped you fall asleep? Well, it turns out that the grown up version can be an effective music therapy for adults with sleeping disorders.

What they found across that entire range of research was a statistically significant improvement in sleep quality based on the introduction of pre-bedtime music, with no evidence of publication bias having been observed.  Their conclusion was that music can assist in improving the sleep quality of patients with acute and chronic sleep disorders.

If you or someone you know is suffering from a sleeping disorder, feel free to give some grownup lullaby music a try.  And if the disorder continues to be a problem, it may be that a closer look at your condition by a sleep specialist is in order.   The cumulative negative consequences to your body and to your quality of life if you are suffering from a sleeping disorder warrants taking additional action sooner rather than later.
